March of this year, my good friend Drey Lallo, together with her son Asejia joined our trip to Coron, Busuanga. This was our “welcome summer” trip for this year and our first time in Coron that’s why we were so excited. Heard a lot of things about this place and we were all set to see and conquer the second class municipality in the province of Palawan. I’ve been to Puerto Princesa (see this entry) and it was just great, and I have the same expectation for Coron. And the place did not fail to amuse us.

Air travel via Cebu Pacific, we arrived in Francisco B. Reyes Airport in Coron, the largest town in Busuanga Island. Located at the northern tip of Palawan, this island is known for several Japanese shipwrecks World War II vintage. The area around the wrecks have pleasant rock formations which provide for excellent snorkeling opportunities, with underwater visibility extending up to 80 feet. The aquatic views from the sunken Japanese warships are listed in Forbes Traveler Magazine’s top 10 best scuba sites in the world.

We stayed at Rudy’s Place Lodge that is located at National highway Barangay 6., Coron, Palawan. It is a simple lodge place where you can relax and experience tranquility, hear the bird humming with calmness and comfort. They have cottages made out of bamboo where you can sit back or lay down & read your favorite noble. It’s a 45 minutes transport from the airport to the lodge.

Price ranges from P600.00-P1,500.00 that is good for 3 people. We had a MJ Room for P1,500.00/night good for the 4 of us. We had a verbal arrangement for the extra guest and they were nice enough to accommodate it and gave it to us for free. The room is very spacious and it has 2 double beds, aircon, tv and bathroom. And your reservation with them includes a van pick up at the airport (back and forth).

After checking in, we asked the staff on how we can go to Maquinit Hot Spring (see this entry) for our first agenda. They called a tricycle for us to bring us there. After enjoying the hot spring, we had our dinner at Kawayanan Grill Station, just ask your tricycle driver to bring you there. Just add P50.00 on the agreed price you will have with the driver. The resto has great food and good ambiance. This is where most of the foreigners go for their dinner.

The grill was openly arranged on a stone-paved atrium with bamboo huts and parasols lining up its perimeter. The main bar holds it all together, being located on a tiki hut right smack in the middle of everything. The atmosphere’s laid back; it was something you’d expect to see on a beach, but since the town of Coron really had no beachfront, we’ll just have to make-believe we’re on one.

The next day, we had our breakfast first before our island Tour. You can order your breakfast ahead of time so come morning, on whatever time you ask them to prepare it, it will be ready for you. Breakfast meal is P100.00/person that includes a coffee already. They also do pack lunch for island tour for P300.00/person or you can personalize the request, depending on what you want them to buy, prepare and cook for you.

They again arranged our Island Tour by preparing our tricycle going to the pier, and the boat we will use for the island tour. Vacation made easy! It’s P1,500.00 for the boat for 2-5 people and it’s a trip going to Siete Pe Cados, Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon and Banol Beach and to other tourist spots. The tour was just spectacular. The sights are breath taking. I can’t believe I was seeing it for real, and it’s in the Philippines.

After our island tour, we decided to check out the market place in Coron and had our merienda and dried fish shopping, which the place is also known for. We checked out also the Tourism Center which we thought was operational already but it’s still being fixed. We also checked out the Souvenir shop, a tricycle ride from the pier, for our pasalubong to our friends and family. They have a lot of souvenir items you can choose from.

That night, we tried the food in Sea Dive Restaurant for our last dinner in Coron. Our tricycle driver told us that people frequent this place for their great food. It’s a bit expensive (but not too much) but they will definitely deliver a great menu. And our driver was just right. The food was great! The ambiance was also awesome, right in front of the sea so expect the cool wind to give you a pure island relaxation. You’ll see a lot of foreigners dining in this place.

The next day, we started our day, our last day in Coron, very early and went to Mt. Tapyas. It was very early, twas still dark when we started hiking on this mountain trail. We called it our morning cardio exercise. But the tiring hike was all worth it as the view at the top was just spectacular. You’ll see the whole island and it was just relaxing to be there. A lot of locals do their morning jogging in Mt. Tapyas and everyone visiting Coron should not miss doing this activity.

After our hike, we went back to our Lodge and prepared our things and went straight to the airport for our return flight to Manila. This time, we took Zest Air for our air travel and it was our first time to ride with this airline. All in all, we had a super fun experience in Coron most especially the island tour. It was just unforgettable. And I don’t mind going back to Coron and fall in love again with the place.

“Too often travel, instead of broadening the mind, merely lengthens the conversation.”

City of Los Baños is a 1st class urban city in the province of Laguna and is bordered on the south and southwest by Mount Makiling, on the north by Laguna de Bay, on the northwest by Calamba City and on the east by the town of Bay. The town is located 63 kilometers southeast of Manila and is accessible via the South Luzon Expressway. Very easy to go to. That’s why when Call Center boomed in our country, team buildings in Los Banos, Laguna became an instant hit because of its proximity and the availability of affordable private pools.

I cannot remember how many team buildings I’ve been part of from different companies and held in Los Banos, Laguna. The overnight swimming, the non stop drinking at night, the videoke singing that cannot be absent in every team building, the preparation and cooking of food, the grilling of fish and pork chop, and the getting to know the other side of your co-workers during the team building. Having a team building in Los Banos is the easiest and cheapest thing to do.

With so many private pools that you can choose from, ranging from P3,000.00-P4,000.00 during off-peak season, and P5,000.00-P10,000.00 during peak seasons (summer), many can have an intimate team building in Los Banos, Laguna. Private pools in Los Banos usually includes several rooms, cooking utensils, water dispenser and videoke machine. If you want to have an exclusive and private team building, this is one good option for you.

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.”

Coming from the first half of our day tour in Hongkong (see this entry), we went to Disneyland Resort where we spent the second half of our day there. The theme park is located on reclaimed land in Penny’s Bay, Lantau Island which was opened to visitors, both local and tourists on September 12, 2005. It’s one big beautiful park, mostly similar to Disneyland in Anaheim, California (see this entry).

I think Disney attempted to avoid problems of cultural backlash by incorporating Chinese culture, customs, and traditions when designing and building the resort, including adherence to the rules of Feng Shui for sure. For instance, I noticed a bend was put in a walkway near the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort entrance so good “qi” (chi) energy wouldn’t flow into the South China Sea. Same for their restaurants where they serve local dishes.

Since we arrived in Disneyland during lunch time, we were hungry already and just ready to eat. We had our lunch at Plaza Inn located at the Main Street. The restaurant is inspired by the movie “Mulan” that serves Cantonese-style dim sum, signature shrimps, spring rolls, BBQ honey-glazed pork fillets and other delicious meals. I was just so loaded and energized by their sumptuous food.

Then, we started strolling around and checked out what was in store for us at the park. The park consists of four themed areas: Main Street, U.S.A., Fantasyland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland. The theme park’s staff members speak in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin so there’s no problem in terms of communication. Even their guide maps are printed in traditional and simplified Chinese as well as English, French, and Japanese.

I have enjoyed Adventureland the most. Specifically the Tarzan Tree House. You need to ride the river raft to get there and climb the steps up to the top to enjoy a gorgeous view of the surrounding land. The tree will take you to the journey of Tarzan’s life and evolution. Nice attraction. You’ll also see the Festival of the Lion King show and the Jungle River Cruise in Adventureland, as well as some Jungle puppet show, Liki Tiki and Jungle Drumming.

For now, Disneyland Hongkong has four themed areas but will have additional three more by 2014 that will house the Toy Story Land, Grizzle Gulch, and Mystic Point. Currently, it occupies 22.4 hectares (55 acres) and will be expanded to 27.4 hectares (68 acres) when the three new themed areas are completed. That sounds exciting and gives us another reason to come back to Disneyland Hongkong.

Our tour guide said that you can see the whole park for half of the day but walking non stop for hours was really tiring. I think, me and my parents took 5 rides only during our visit because the lines will really kill your time and you won’t be able to see everything. We visited the Tarzan House, entered the Demon Jungle (it was spooky), took the train that will give a tour inside the park, a ride in Buzz Lightyear Astro Blaster, and the exciting and breath-taking Space Mountain which almost killed my mom. Haha.

And since it was October of the year when we visited this park, it was their Halloween special and their shows at night are Spooktacular. Instead of the regular Disney loved characters parading, the stars of the night are the villains of different Disney movies. The Main street going to the Castle are packed with all the park visitors to witness the spectacular show. It was really magical, and spooky.

It was a wonderful experience. The Halloween theme made it different this time since it was my second Disneyland visit. And my folks have enjoyed it. We all have returned to the kid side of ourselves. The beauty of arranging your visit in Disneyland thru a travel agency is you will no longer need to fall in line, take the hassle of commute, and no need to worry about your schedule as it is fixed. So it was one of the highlights of our visit in Hongkong.

“Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.”

A person in the past (Jay) invited me to see him in his office in Palacio Del Gobernador, the office of Comelec in Intramuros, Manila, for an afternoon chat years ago. It was a long time since we’ve seen each other so it was our time to catch up and see what has happened to our lives after deciding to have a separate lives. Aside from catching up, he invited me for a stroll in the famous Manila landmark, the Intramuros. My first time in this place.

Intramuros is the oldest district of the present day city of Manila, the capital of the Republic of the Philippines. Nicknamed the “Walled City”, Intramuros is the historic fortified city of Manila during the Spanish Colonial Period. Located then along Manila Bay and south of the mouth of Pasig River, its thick defensive walls were built by the Spaniards in the 16th century to protect the city from invasion. Its name in Spanish, literally “within the walls”, meaning a city enclosed by thick, high walls and surrounded by moats.

In October 2010, the Global Heritage Fund identified Intramuros, along with Fort Santiago, as one of 12 worldwide sites most “On the Verge” of irreparable loss and destruction, citing insufficient management and development pressures. The site of Intramuros was originally a large Indianized-Malayan-Islamic settlement named “Maynila”, ruled by Datus, Rajahs, and a Sultan. The Manila Cathedral is also located in Intramuros.

During the time of our visit, there was a Mindanao trade show happening in the place that’s why the area was decorated by colorful decorations of Mindanao culture, which Jay originated from. Timing that him, coming from the southern part of the country, have introduced me to the culture he has grown up with, together with the showcase happening in the place. It was fun inside as you can see different artifacts and products from Mindanao.

Beginning in the 1980s, the Intramuros Administration has been slowly restoring the walls and the city within. The remaining five original gates have been restored or rebuilt: Isabel II Gate, Parian Gate, Real Gate, Sta. Lucia Gate and the Postigo Gate. The walled city is the only district of Manila where old Spanish-era influences are still plentiful. Newer buildings are built in the style of the era.

It’s good to know that there’s still a part of Manila that has been preserved to keep it alive for the next generations to see. History is well written in the stones in Intramuros and should be visited by every Filipino. Just take the Roxas Boulevard road, you can either go straight ahead (towards pier) and enter through the anda circle (you’ll end up at Manila Cathedral/Fort santiago area) or you may right turn and enter through the round table (Pamantasan nang Lungsod nang Maynila area). Parking slots are available within Manila Cathedral area.

“Not all those who wander are lost.”

Just after two weeks of our first travel to Puerto Galera (see this entry), my co-supervisor E.J. Rivero (left) back in People Support and his team won a contest and the prize they got was a trip to Puerto Galera for an all-expense paid team building. My friends Zue Zapanta, Yvette Roderno (girls in the middle) and I were invited to join their team so the three of us followed them in Puerto Galera to have another fun in the sun in the famous Oriental Mindoro island destination!

Then, we asked our good friends Jze Guion and Francis Chua to follow as well. Friends reunited in Puerto Galera! I can’t believe that just after two weeks, I was back again In Puerto Galera, the place I used to ignore before. Well I guess I have enjoyed it and it’s really a good place for bonding with your friends. Swimming after checking-in, dining, swimming again, stroll in the island, then swimming again, party and drink at night, and swimming the next day. That’s the life in the island.

Thanks to E.J. for inviting us and for being part of their team building. It paved way for my second visit to the island. I had a great time with my friends and surely my 2007 summer was well spent in Puerto Galera. Hehe.

“Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quiestest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey.”

Coming from the last and delayed flight of Airphil Express from Manila to Cebu, and after we checked in at Hotel Stella where our friend Wee Dimalanta was waiting for us, we took a taxi going to Crown Regency Hotel in Cebu to do our Sky Adventure Experience. This was our first time to do this as we failed to experience this on our last visit in Cebu way back in 2009. I was up for the experience but hubbee was more excited as he’s the more adventurous type than me. It was 11:00 pm already at that time.

Crown Regency Hotel in Cebu is the tallest hotel tower in the Philippines that boasts the ultimate escapade that visitors from all over the world can revel in – the different level of excitement in the Sky Experience Adventure. This is the first in the Philippines. Aside from their luxurious and cozy rooms of this hotel, you can also thrill to their sky rides and attractions at the world’s first Edge Coaster, Paramount Climbing, Zipline, the country’s first and only Sky Walk Extreme, or transport yourself to a world of surprise at their 4D theater.

Tickets are sold at the 19th floor of Tower 1. Entrance Fee is P250.00/pax with free Ref Magnet or Photo Magnet. You can go the Sky Adventure Experience area even if you don’t want to take any of the rides, just pay the entrance fee. If you want to experience the Edge Coaster only, or the Sky Walk only, it will cost you P550.00 which includes the entrance fee plus souvenir which I and Wee paid for ourselves. But if you want to experience both rides like hubbee did, it will cost you P750.00 and it includes the entrance and souvenir as well.

Once you’re done, you will need to go up to 38th floor for the Edge Coaster ride. Their staff will assist you in preparing for your ride once you present your ticket. This is where the Sky Observatory is located too where you can see coin-operated telescopes and binoculars for a glimpse of the breathtaking view of the city and the radiant nightscape. It’s really the best time to do this at night. The view was just spectacular!

The Edge Coaster moves around the edge of the building and tilts initially at 30 degrees. It can even be tilted up to 55 degrees which hubbee did. According to him, it feels like your hanging at the edge of the building and will fall as you tilt higher. It takes about 4 minutes only to go around the outer rim of the tower. I suggest that if you like this kind of ride, don’t be too quick to finish it and just enjoy it since you control the movement of the ride.

After hubbee’s ride and us taking pictures with spectacular view as our background, we went down to 37th floor to do our Sky Walk Extreme experience. You need to register first your complete name that will be used for your certificate and you need to sign a safety agreement before you take the ride. Then, cameras, jewelries, watch and your own shoes will have to be kept in a safety deposit box that they will provide.

Ride includes an orange jumpsuit and white shoes which will be provided once you enter and present your ticket. I encourage those who will try this ride to bring your own socks. They require socks and shoes for the walk. If you don’t have one, they sell socks for a minimum price. So for you to avoid having additional expenses, bring one or wear shoes and socks when going there.

The Sky Walk Extreme lets thrill-seekers walk around the edge of the building in which the platform where Sky walkers would step on looked intimidating. Our funny and witty guide gave us a little briefing on safety and an added encouragement before we started. When we finally stepped out on the platform and began our walk, we were instantly seized with a little, just a little sense of panic. Our guide humored us during our first few steps and very efficiently distracted the moment of agitation by pointing out the breathtaking view that was set before us.

Our jaws dropped at the magnificent scenery. We could see not just the whole of Cebu but even its neighboring islands and beyond. If you want something as far as your eyes could see, the Sky Walk Extreme will surely make it happen. We got too busy taking in the experience that we absolutely forgot about our fear. The adventure stroll turned out to be both comforting and exciting.

The walk around the building usually takes around 15 minutes to finish, including the stunts like sitting on the edge of the platform but our guide allowed us to stay and enjoy the view for 30 minutes. It became our hang out area on a saturday night in Cebu. Our guide was not only accommodating and very funny but shared good information around Cebu and personal stories too. You should look for him if you’ll try this.

The Sky Adventure Experience is a must for those who will visit Cebu City. They are open from 2:00 pm to 12:00 midnight from Mondays to Fridays, while it opens at 10:00 am during weekends and closes at 2:00 am. Pictures of your Sky Walk Extreme will be provided by them and will cost for a fee. And after the exciting walk, you will get your certificate before your leave as a proof of your accomplishment. We’re happy we’ve experienced this!!!

“I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.”

Levine Museum of the New South is an interactive history museum in Charlotte, North Carolina that has the most comprehensive interpretation of post-Civil War southern society featuring men, women and children, black and white, rich and poor, long-time residents and newcomers who have shaped the South of U.S.A. since the Civil War. The musuem is located at 200 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. From I-77 North, take John Belk Freeway / I-277 North (exit 9B) to the College Street exit. Take College Street (one-way) to 7th Street. Turn right onto 7th Street. The Museum is on the right, on the corner of College and 7th, with the entrance facing 7th Street. Admission Fee is $6 for adults and $5 for kids.

If you’ll bring a car, you may park in the Seventh Street Station next to the Museum and receive 2 hours of validated, complementary parking. After 2 hours, parking fees apply. But on weekends and for evening events, the museum provides parking validation, with no hourly limit. Visitors should present parking ticket for validation at the Guest Services desk upon arrival. Once inside, it will travel you through their main exhibit, Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers, and discover the New South from field to factory to finance with a guide. You’ll discover also the first black textile mill owner, Good Samaritan Hospital’s Chapel, the roots of the sit-in movement and significant events in the history of African Americans in the Carolina Piedmont.

Since there’s nothing for us to do one saturday morning, our hosts brought us here so we can learn more of Charlotte where our Corporate Office is located, and most of the people we’re working with are living there. It’s a nice museum, very informative most especially for non american people. Nice!

“A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.”

What Manila Southwoods Manor offers is something you can’t and won’t want to miss. This lush condotel in Southwoods Avenue Carmona, Cavite lays at your feet a gamut of topnotch facilities. It has established itself as a condotel with a world class reputation. It is known for its cozy elegance and friendly atmosphere that make guests feel right at home. They have a golf course, driving range, tennis court, and pool that will keep you occupied with leisure.

Your accommodation at Manila Southwoods Manor will remind you of home, but you’ll realize that it’s far better. Elegant and cozy, each room has a dining area, toilet & shower with water heater, kitchenette, and writing desk & chair. Other in-room features include a cable TV, Wi-Fi, IDD phone, refrigerator, and mini-bar. A safe, hair dyer, and iron with board are also provided in Manila Southwoods Manor’s accommodation in Carmona, Cavite.

Our visit there was thru my friend Hazel Pobrero who has a relative that owns a unit there. So we were able to enjoy and stay at Manor for free. Except for the use of swimming pool which charge guests P200.00/person and is a walking distance from the condotel. They have big pools which you can enjoy most especially when you are with your good friends. The atmosphere is very relaxing. Fortunately, since it was a weekday, we were the only guests swimming at that time. Lucky!

Because of its close proximity to the metro, we used to frequent this place before for a night hang out. This is where we had baby showers, team building and just pure relaxation. I miss those days. It’s about time to go back, right Hazel? Haha.

“The journey not the arrival matters.”

One summer weekend last year when hubbee and I, together with my family and few relatives, went to Villa Martha Picnic Grove in Nagcarlan, Laguna for an excursion. I missed my childhood excursion days when my parents, together with my relatives used to force me in joining their simple and not so expensive out of town swimming. It was my first time in Nagcarlan, so it was my cousin Jomarc who became our road guide. Unfortunately, I’m unable to provide the “how to go to” in this entry.

Villa Martha Picnic Grove is located at Brgy. Silangan, Napapatid, Nagcarlan, Laguna. You can reach them by calling their direct line 049-5633450 or their cellphone number 09175571415. The place is quite known in Nagcarlan because aside from swimming in their pools, guests can also wade in the stream. The resort doesn’t use chlorinated water in the pools as their source of water is the stream. The water that flows there comes from Mount Banahaw directly.

There is an entrance fee that you will just pay thru their staff who will welcome and approach you once you crossed the bridge. They will guide you to the cottage that you can choose. They have free parking for those who will bring their own cars. No corkage fee, you can bring your food and you can also grill anywhere in the resort. There’ also a videoke machine if you want to sing. I just highly suggest that you go to the resort early, most especially during weekends as it gets crowded in the middle of the day.

Villa Martha was established on February 14, 1998. The resort used to call it a “picnic groove”. Few years later, Mr. Gaudencio Francia and his wife, owners of the resort, decided to call it “Villa Martha”. This resort became their family business that helped raised their 3 children. There’s nothing much to expect from the place but a nice resort to hang out with your family. The best part for me is the stream falls area of the resort. Water there is so cold.

Aside from the eight mountains located in Nagcarlan, Laguna, this town also have beautiful places to relax and enjoy. For a classic excursion feel, this place has the perfect setting for it. Next time you’re in San Pablo or Nagcarlan area, try to visit the place and bring your whole family and relatives.

“If you reject the food, ignore the customs, fear the religion and avoid the people, you might better stay at home.”

It was an unplanned travel to Davao when I was in Cagayan De Oro with my ex way back in 2007. So I had to change my return flight in an instant and boarded one of the vans at the Agora Bus terminal in the middle of the night because all of the air-conditioned bus going to Davao are full. The ordinary buses are packed with people, it’s like a sardines in a form of a bus. That I cannot do because I’m clostrophobic so we opted for the vans available at the side of the terminal. After 6 hours of land travel, we arrived in Davao.

After checking in to our hotel, we hopped in to a jeepney going to Sasa, km 11 wharf, or local calls it Paradise Island wharf where motorboats are available to ferry passengers direct to Babak wharf in Samal island. It’s the direct ride going to Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort since there are three ports that has boats going to Samal Island (check this link). Fare costs P15.00/person. It will only take 7 minutes to get there operating from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort is very proud of its humble beginnings. What started out as a weekend picnic destination back in the seventies, catering mostly to friends and their families has become what it is today as not only the preferred island getaway for families in Davao but is also the byword for those growing impulsive groups who are so busy and yet wise enough to squeeze in leisure in their hectic schedules at the spur of the moment just like what happened to us.

Having a shoreline of almost eight hundred meters, it is the only place in this part of Samal Island that has maintained its shores by feeding the fishes, clean them with having periodic “Scubasurero Activities”, and has placed a “safety net” to ward off jelly fish and rubbish, discouraging anglers from poaching the area and encouraging its visitors to enjoy the marine life and leave the same so that others may also enjoy them. Its white sand beach as well as its surroundings are combed and cleaned throughout the day.

The swimming area is adequately manned by lifeguards all day which makes swimming more enjoyable and worry free even for young kids and a few strokes farther leads you to an area perfect for snorkeling or even diving. Surely, a wet experience beyond compare to a man–made swimming pool. They also have kayaks available for a fee which is one of the nicest activity you can do in the resort.

There are more things to do in Paradise Island Resort aside from swimming at the beach. You can visit their aviary that boasts of a collection of birds such as pheasants, pigeons, parrots, eagles, lories, lovebirds, doves and hornbills. Kids can play at the Park and Playground. They also offer massage inside the comforts of their fully air-conditioned Massage Room. The resort has souvenir shops, Ice Cream kiosk, Business center, restaurant and has rooms for overnight stay. Prices ranges from P2,300.00 to P3,200.00. Entrance Fee to the resort is P100.00/person.

We just had a day tour since it was an unplanned trip. But we enjoyed it and it’s a good place to visit. A lot of families are frequenting the place, mostly locals having picnic. So when you’re in Davao City, do not miss out to have a quick tour in Samal Island.

“A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving.”
